The Spring 2017 Film Series continues our dedication to an appreciation of Italian Language and Culture through Film. All films are free of charge and open to the public.

Casa Films are scheduled monthly from March through June on the First Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the lounge on the ground floor of the Casa Italiana at Nazareth College.

IACC Films are scheduled monthly from March through June on the Third Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at The Italian American Community Center, 150 Frank DiMino Way [ formerly Marconi Blvd.] 14624
   [Off Manitou Road, 0.4 miles North of Buffalo Road between Buffalo Rd. (Route 33) and Route 531 ]

A meek bookkeeper, nicely played by Nino Manfredi, finds his squallid life changed when he witnesses a robbery and becomes the friend of a policeman. He is introduced to shooting and becomes prolific. This changes his dull existence, but when he gets into trouble with gangsters, he'll regret his new life.

Toto plays a girl-happy dolt who assumes the identity of a missing Turkish gentleman. With stolen identification papers, the oafish impostor enters the home of a wealthy man who hired the Turk to protect his wife and daughter. What our hero doesn't know--but everybody else does--is that the real Turk is a eunuch.

Giuseppe Garibaldi is a modest librarian in a small town in Lombardy. He loves to read and transmit culture to children, despite the library's lack of funds. Meanwhile, in Rome the prime minister is forced to resign, and the leader of the center-right party has to find a solution: a puppet president who can get the necessary votes to prevail in the government. Giuseppe is chosen as chairman of the board and immediately notices the cruel world of Italian politics. Giuseppe, friend of the people, begins to do many good works, earning the popular support. Meanwhile, the leader of the center-right party wants to defeat him.

This film is adapted from Lorenza Mazzetti's acclaimed autobiographical novel and inspired by her experiences in WWII Tuscany. In 1944, newly-orphaned pre-teen sisters come to live in the Tuscan villa of their uncle (Jeroen Krabbe), a German-Jewish intellectual, and his wife, (Isabella Rossellini). The Christian girls become fond of their uncle and aunt. As war rages around them, the uncle is warned by the local priest to flee with his family. He refuses, putting the family at risk. As the family awaits the arrival of the British, they are caught unaware by the return of the Nazis.

The story begins as young unwed mother-to-be Maria (Adriana Benetti) desperately casts about for a means of avoiding disgrace. Making the acquaintance of good-natured Paolo (Gino Cervi), Maria persuades him to pose as her husband and meet her family. Immediately ingratiating himself with Maria's parents, Paolo plays his part so well that only a completely unforeseen disaster could spoil the charade. And when that disaster inevitably arrives, it is Paolo who comes to the rescue simply by telling the truth.

A sixty year old attorney (Marcello Mastroianni) goes to visit his son (Massimo Troisi) who is in the military in Livorno. The visit is an opportunity to talk about the future of the young man. It turns out that the father and son do not have much to say to each other. The son is very different from his father and does not want to plan too much for the future. They end up arguing. In the end, they part amicably without understanding each other.

The story is about two brothers and their wives and the interactions between them and their two high school age children. When the kids get into serious trouble together, how will the parents' relationships change with and among each other? Will the parents protect the kids or force them to face the consequences of their actions?

Tensions between two brothers and their families escalate when a video of two teenagers, possibly the son of one brother and the daughter of the other, beating a homeless woman to death, shows up.

In this comedy, a young man steals fruit from orchards for survival, sale, and the sheer excitement of courting danger. He is caught and thrown into a Sicilian prison. His cell mate makes him an irresistable offer. Upon release, the young man must record the convict's girlfriend performing Sicilian folk songs, which she is reluctant to do. In return, he will receive his own piece of land, which he has long coveted.
