Peccato Che Sia Una Canaglia   [Too Bad She's Bad]     (1954)
Directed by Alessandro Blasetti

Sunday November 06, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.   at the Casa Italiana
In Italian with English subtitles   (94 min.)

Sophia Loren plays Lina, the well-trained daughter in a family of professional crooks. Her father is Vittorio DeSica, the master con man who can talk his way out of pretty much anything. Father and daughter together prove to be a large thorn in the side of Paolo *\(Marcello Mastroianni), an honest cabbie. When Lina tries to hijack his cab, Paolo falls for her hard. But he can't really abide his dishonest life and criminal family. Even though they claim never to rob the working class, Paolo is repulsed, but Lina's appeal keeps bringing him back for more.

This Italian romp highlights the same kind of intimate fun that were the hallmark of Loren's other classic comedies with Mastroianni, with dialog that has that Neapolitan flavor and settings that showcase postwar Italy. Mastroianni alternates confusion with outrage, but comes out best in the scenes where he's shown to be hopelessly in love with Lina. Loren is indeed a looker, but also manages to display her comic skills to great effect..

This film features the comedic writing talents of Agenore Incrocci and Furio Scarpelli. Germi's vignettes of Sicilian social customs in Divorzio all'Italiana (1961) and Sedotta e Abbandonata dissect the unwritten codes of behavior governing relationships between the sexes in that male-dominated, insular culture. Don Vincenzo, the father of four girls, struggles to salvage the family honor when one of them is seduced by a scoundrel and the hypocrite refuses to marry the girl, since she is no longer a virgin.
