Directed by Emanuele Crialese

In Italian   with English subtitles   (118 min.)

A family living in poverty leaves behind the world they know in hope of finding new opportunities in this historical drama from director Emanuele Crialese. The Mancusos are a family struggling to make ends meet in a small farming community in Sicily in 1913. Life has long been hard for the Mancuso Family, who have lived in the same village for generations, and one day they are visited by a man who claims to be from the United States. The man tells them of the wonder and plenty of life in America, an offers to make it possible for them to travel to the New World and find work there. The Mancusos cautiously accept the offer, but after a dangerous voyage aboard an ocean liner, the family arrives in New York to face a number of new challenges -- the humiliating examination at Ellis Island, and abandoning their old lives and ways as they struggle to assimilate in a massive city that is now their home. Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Francesco Casisa and Vincenzo Amato, The Golden Door (aka Nuovomondo) received its world premier at the 2006 Venice Film Festival (where it won a number of awards). Non Ti Pago [I Will Not Pay]   (1964)
Written, Directed and Starring Eduardo De Filippo

Sunday October 12, 2008 at 4:00 P.M.
In Neapolitan with ITALIAN SUBTITLES   (112 min.)

This film contrasts Ferdinando Qualiuolo (Eduardo) who loses enormous sums to the lottery, with his employee, Bertolini, who always wins and who desires the hand of Ferdinando's daughter. One night, Bertolini dreams of Ferdinando's deceased father who gives him the numbers to win four million Lire. Ferdinando, maintaining that this is an error of address (that his father was trying to give him the numbers), seizes the winning ticket. Only a skillfully contrived blackmail convinces him to return the ticket, but not before invoking supernatural justice on Bertolini. The curse has sensational effects, but ultimately a happy ending results.

Il Federale
[The Fascist]
  (1961)
Directed by Luciano Salce

Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 4:00 P.M.
In Italian   with English subtitles   (97 min.)

Il Federal is an amusing comedy (almost slap-stick at times) set in German occupied Italy of 1944. Primo Arcovazzi (Ugo Tognazzi) is a fanatic member of I Brigate Nere (The Fascist Brigade) and is given the task of retrieving Prof. Erminio Bonafè (Georges Wilson), an opponent of the regime, who has fled to Abruzzo from Rome to escape capture. He succeeds in capturing Bonafè early in the film. The bulk of film consists in the misadventures of bringing him back to Rome. The obstacles are many and the two slowly become fond of each other despite their positions of captor and prisoner. A surprise awaits when the two finally arrive back in Rome.

[The King of Naples]
  (1989)
Written & Directed by Luigi Magni

Sunday November 9, 2008 at 4:00 P.M.
In Italian with NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES   (90 min.)

This historical comedy/drama examines the Roman exile of Francis II, aka Francischiello, the last Bourbon King of the Two Sicilies. It is an interesting character study, contrasting Francis II (Giancarlo Giannini) with his wife, Maria Sofia of Austria (Ornella Muti). While he is resigned to the end of his reign due to Garibaldi and the Risorgimento and of his line (having no heir to the throne), Maria Sofia is determined to restore the Kingdom and leave behind an heir.

Nello (Neri Marcoré), a 35-year-old teacher of Greek and Latin, is sent to Bologna by his father, Cesare (Giancarlo Giannini), the owner of the Papal tailor's shop in Rome. His father hopes Nello will find a wife in Bolgna and produce an heir for the business. After several unsuccessful efforts, Nello meets Angela, an exuberant, beautiful young blind girl with whom he falls hopelessly in love. The girl's father and Nello's parents do not approve of the relationship, but the real problem is Angela's temperament. The film's focus is Nello and his attempts to find a wife. The cinematography is breath taking. This fine film won a number of awards and nominations for Best Director and Best Original Story by Pupi Avati and Best Actor by Neri Marcoré.
